Analytically oriented therapists want to provide the treatment that they believe will most benefit their patients, but the obstacles presented by the insurance system to authorizing such treatment can be very frustrating. This presentation will discuss the insurance process of authorization and how to become more empowered when dealing with insurance companies by providing valuable information on how to navigate the process and address common challenges.

Presenter Information

Dr. Keith graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in psychology and an interest in mental health.  He received his Doctor of Medicine with Honors from Baylor College of Medicine in 1969 after which he did his internship at the UCLA Affiliated Hospital Program and his adult and child psychiatric residency at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. Following two years in the Navy, he opened his private practice in San Diego in 1975.  He became a psychiatric reviewer for various managed care companies starting in the 1970’s and has served as medical director for Integrated Behavioral Health, United Behavioral Health and for Anthem, where he was the West Region Medical Director until his retirement in 2014.  His experience includes over 35 years in private practice as well as being medical director of an acute inpatient psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents, an adolescent psychiatric residential treatment facility and an inpatient adult psychiatric unit in a general hospital.  He is a graduate of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Institute in Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis. From 20013 to 2016 he was a Commissioner on the Mental Health Services Oversight & Accountability Commission for the State of California.
